A Conversation With an Ass

SI ExifNumbers 22:28 And the LORD opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?

God opened the mouth of an ass (donkey) to save Balaam’s life. At the request of King Balak, Balaam the prophet saddled his ass and began his journey to Moab to curse the children of Israel. In return for cursing the people, the king promised Balaam a promotion and whatever he asked for. There are five things to note in Numbers 22: 1.) God is willing and able to do whatever is necessary to help His children avert evil. God made an ass talk. The ass saw what Balaam could not see. She saw the angel of the LORD on three separate occasions and refused to move forward. Each time he refused, Balaam hit the donkey. The third time Balaam hit him he began to speak. He said, “What have I done to make you hit me three times?” Balaam answered, “You’ve made a fool of me! If I had a sword in my hand, I’d kill you right now.” The donkey said to Balaam, “I’m your own donkey. You’ve always ridden me. Have I ever done this to you before?” Of course, the answer was no. 2.) The LORD will open the eyes of your understanding. At this point, the LORD opened Balaam’s eyes so that he could see the angel of the LORD. The angel said, “I’ve come here to stop you because the trip you’re taking is evil. The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If it had not turned away from me, I would certainly have killed you by now but spared the donkey.”  3.) No man can promote you. Promotion comes from God; He alone is the judge who can put one down and raise up another. 4.) It is God who gives you the power to get wealth. Wealth gained by the hand of man brings sorrow, but the blessing of the LORD, which includes wealth, has no sorrow attached to it. 5.) No man can curse what or whom God has blessed. Balaam said, “How shall I curse, whom God hath not cursed? or how shall I defy, whom the LORD hath not defied”? NO ONE! If God be for us, who can be against us? NO ONE!
